About Dave Young

Founder & Professional Writer

Dave Young graduated from Kennesaw State University in 1998 with an English Literature and Writing degree. Minoring in Philosophy combined with many electives in computer classes landed Dave an internship on campus working in the office of the VP of Business and Finance. There he learned how to develop robust database management systems (RDBMS) using Microsoft Access. He quickly learned how to build SQL statements which led to his first job at NetSurfer, a subscriber management software company for Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

In 2000 Dave landed a contract position at Earthlink, Inc., one of the top ISPs in the USA as an application developer. There he developed Network Operation Center (NOC) applications using MySQL, Perl, PHP, and JavaScript. He tied the front end of web based systems to backend third party software systems such as TelAlert for a completely automated NOC notification system. The system was deployed across six EarthLink data centers in the nation. As a result, NOC engineers could be notified based on customized escalation policies via RIM text pagers, cell phones, email, and desktop phone systems.

While freelancing at EarthLink, Dave developed Gluepoint Automated Billing System (GABS) for ISPs and Netsurfer NetKit software systems. The application was built as an Application Service Provider (ASP) using programming languages PHP, JavaScript, Perl, and MySQL Databases. GABS was a hit and served nearly 200 subscribers under a leading Virginia based Internet Service Provider.

Advance to 2001, Dave moved on to Peregrine Systems, Inc. and developed a billing system running on Sun Solaris servers, Oracle 8i database and thousands of lines of billing data stored in flat files called Comma Separate Values (CSV). Each month the system would read .csv files using a complicated Perl script to check for data integrity. After each line of the 600,000 entry .csv files were read, the data was inserted into an Oracle database. Perl scripts then read from the database and sent a completely formatted Excel spreadsheet to top managers within the system. The Peregrine Systems billing system developed by Dave saved managers a minimum of 40 hours a month and billed millions of dollars in sales - all completely automated.

After several years of developing billing systems, NOC tools, and various web based MySQL and Oracle driven tools, Dave moved into technical writing at ModernBill, LLC where he developed and published user documentation for multiple versions of the ModernBill billing system software designed exclusively for the web hosting industry. While at ModernBill, Dave also developed highly engaging promotional writing skills and advanced search engine optimization techniques. These skills combined have propelled Dave into a career as both a technical and promotional writer for the software, hosting, and technology industries.

In 2006 Dave went back to his roots as a consultant and started Young Copy, a full service technical and promotional writing company. Today Dave enjoys the many benefits of writing exclusively for the software, hosting, and technology industries and has helped many clients increase their revenues and develop professionally written website content, user documentation, and promotional marketing materials.
